Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory [1971]: Tinker Scene

While I was doing some research I came across this link on youtube from the movie 'Willy Wonka' which quotes the first few lines of Allingham's Poem, "Up the airy mountain Down the rushy glen, We daren't go a-hunting, For fear of little men.."

This made me think about the Wonder Chocolate Factory and how appealing 'all things candy' was for me when I was young! Also as a child I was read Fairytale books filled with stories of princess, pixies, mystical creatures and magic! This clip has gave me a few ideas for designing  a children's story book illustrating 'The Fairies'...

A good find Niamh. Some interesting character development (with the guy saying the poem, knives, trolley, disturbing dude) Also the panning shot where Charlie arrives at the gate and the camera slowly reveals the 'Wonka' gate logo and factory. You mentioned below that you might pick a poem and then choose a discipline. You should be choosing a discipline and then choosing a poem to fit. 'The Fairies' will suit most. What area would you like to look at for the PPDs, you could look at more than one discipline if you wish. Where does your strengths lie?

  2. I have done alot more research that I need to put together and get up on the blog ! I have been looking at kids illustration books and have different ideas from that.. My weaknesses are using software programs like flash illustrator and anything computer based basically..I just get freaked out when they are mentioned because I cant use them very well! Thats why i liked the idea of visually portraying the poem in a book, because I can hand draw the images and scan them into the computer and tweak them on photoshop!

  3. Hand drawn illustration is fine Niamh, work to your strengths. If you are thinking along the illustrated story book route, you should look to progressing your individual style of illustration. There are many variations, maybe look at illustration with animation, not necessarily as a moving image piece but more towards styling and inspiration. e.g. 'Charlie and Lola' (http://www.charlieandlola.com/),'Third and bird' (http://www.3rdandbird.co.uk/), 'The Comfort Characters' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgdl_wScUhQ) etc. what can you use to create your own style of illustration.
